Cinnabar

Mariposa Mine, Terlingua, Brewster Co., Texas

A rich small cabinet sized specimen of Cinnabar from the Mariposa Mine, Terlingua, Texas. This specimen consists of a thin crust of blood red Cinnabar which covers the display surface of the specimen. While no distinct crystals are present, this is a fine representative sample of Cinnabar from this classic mercury mining district. Cinnabar is a sulfide of mercury and one of the primary ores of the metal.

Terlingua, located just outside of Big Bend National Park, is one of the world's most fascinating mercury deposits. Nine new mercury bearing minerals were discovered at Terlingua and several have yet to be found elsewhere. The mines have been closed for many decades and specimens are true Texas classics.

　　辰紗是非常便宜的礦物，以上三件大標本價格均在US$10以下，受光照後汞會還原出來而有毒性；然而辰砂的母岩如果是印石，就是著名的雞血石，世界上產地只剩昌化與巴林，尤其是辰砂顏色若是像德州的標本為橘紅色血，1Kg價格便超過人民幣100萬，十分驚人。
