貓姥小姐來函問到螢光礦物除了觀賞之外用途為何?我的初步回答:

螢光與稀金屬的離子有很大的關聯,稀金屬在高科技產品使用項目繁多,使用在雷射、超導體、強力磁鐵、光電元件......,螢光礦物雖然不足以提煉稀金屬,但在地質環境上有些關係,研究螢光礦物國內情況不詳,但在國外十分久遠,許多稀金屬的運用是從其中發現的。我開闢這個專輯簡介,屬國內首創,但也勢必讓我去購買大部份的螢光礦物,低價的如矽鋅礦、方解石、螢石...每件10美元左右,貴的也如同金礦一樣都是上百美金的。

在此進一步說明:1‧無機螢光材料化學、稀金屬發光與光譜學之研究是交通大學應用化學系的專長。2.螢光礦物與螢光材質關係密切,從最出使用白鎢礦、閃鋅礦及矽鋅礦,從下列推薦之兩篇文章可知現多以稀金屬矽酸鹽為主流。LED 螢光粉 (Phosphor)白光材料的新突破。3.稀金屬亦用於製作強力磁鐵〈釹磁鐵〉、高溫超導體材料〈SmO1-xFxFeAs,Nd2-xCexCuO4....〉、雷射材料、特殊濾光鏡片〈許多為軍用〉.....等許多用途。

  因此我們今天先來介紹

〈一〉最早被用來作為螢光幕材料的閃鋅礦:

Sphalerite fluorescent mineral, Franklin NJ. Hand-sized specimen of silvery sphalerite from the Taylor Road site, with black willemite and some fluorapatite in the pyroxene matrix. Fluoresces green, orange and blue in short wave UV; bright orange and blue in long wave UV light. You can see thin veins of willemite, and the specks of apatite that fluoresce dull orange SW, but don't appear at all in LW UV light. The long wave response of the sphalerite makes up for it!

Cabinet specimen, measures 5 1/2 inches x 5 1/4 x 1 1/2 inches, and weighs 2 pounds 5 ounces.

 

〈二〉再來是常與矽鋅礦在一起的鋅黃長石 Hardystonite:

Hardystonite fluorescent mineral from Franklin, NJ. Small hand-sized specimen of hardystonite, in an unusual matrix of green willemite grains, calcite, franklinite crystals, and spots of red zincite. Fluorescent dark violet blue, green, and red in short wave UV light.

Small cabinet specimen, measures 2 3/4 inches x 2 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches, and weighs 1 pound.
